Analyzing international organizations: How the concepts we use affect the answers we get

We explore how “international organizations” have been conceptualized and operationalized in the field of International Relations (IR), identify an important gap between two, demonstrate this shapes our understanding world politics. Traditionally, we show, IR has embraced a broad conception international organizations (IOs) that appreciates variation design. However, literature largely coalesced around measurement standard reflects characteristics major postwar IOs. Prevailing measures, therefore, mainly count formal IOs—bodies founded with legally binding agreements—and omit informal IOs, which are non-binding instruments. argue produces disconnect theory empirical evidence used field, since scholars frequently make arguments about IOs general but draw inferences from only. After reviewing emerged, use original dataset on state membership 260 to reanalyze number studies, showing heterogeneous effects for subtypes conflict existing theories varying degrees. These differences imply different findings partly artifacts specific way IO variables by scholars. Based this, offer recommendations improve research practices moving forward.
